#121: Smells Like Denim
The best from this week | 6.8.18 |
USA DENIM
This week I stopped by Fitted Underground's studio to see how they’re building a business making custom jeans here in New York. Aside from the many cool machines, I was struck by the giant rolls of raw denim waiting to be turned into pants. Some of these rolls came from the now-defunct Cone Mills - the last mill in the US to make denim.
Now, of course, this Cone denim has been snatched up and a lot of brands are heavily marketing it as such. Scarcity can be a powerful marketing tool needless to say.
And while it's a shame to realize that here we are here in 2018 in the US of A without a mill that can make the most American of fabrics, I am at least partly optimistic that we have a few people keeping the art of denim making alive.
Much has been said about our transition into a service economy and there’s not much I can add other than a gentle and solemn nod of the head from my little corner of the internet. It's a shame, but who knows, maybe some day all these makers like Fitted will help get Cone mills fired up again.
