#124: Let's Go Fishing
The best from this week | 6.29.18 |
IN THE TIMES
I pitched my first story to the New York Times ten years ago. It was about a little project called VBS, which was part of a growing media company called Vice. I thought they were using online video in a really compelling way, and they were being totally ignored by major media outlets. I thought it was an interesting story and so did The Times, just not with my byline.
This week, I got my second story published in The Times (my first byline was in May), and I'll just say that good things really do take time.
I can’t think of anything else I’ve spent ten years trying to achieve. It’s a little crazy and it hasn’t been without (many) frustrations. This comes with the territory though. Persistence is a real thing though, a very important real thing. Without it, you don't get to do anything that you really really want to do.
With that in mind, please go read my story about the growing fishing scene in Brooklyn. It features a photographer who I really admire, who also happens to make his own plastic baits. His operation isn’t nearly as big as Vice, but he's just as interesting and noteworthy as they were back in 2007. Actually, he's even more interesting.

A Growing Brooklyn Fishing Scene, Artisanal Lures Included (The New York Times)
Fantastic profile of our friends at True.ink a “horse-buying, whiskey-bottling non-media media company.” (Fast Company)
Funny thing. I wanted to pitch a Ry Cooder story but figured someone like Nick Paumgarten would already have it. Also, I’m lazy. (The New Yorker)
Another amazing interview in New York Magazine. This time, David Lynch. (New York Magazine)
A beer blog with some tight writing. (Good Beer Hunting’s Banquet and Chill)
WHISKEY ADVENTURING
Ever pined for a Kentucky whiskey adventure with a rowdy/smart group of people? Let me tell you about the True x Buffalo Trace bourbon experience.
DRY OFF
My favorite beach towel. Drys quickly. Packs tightly. Looks damn good as a robe. This and many more thoughtful gear picks in the Hand & Eye x Huckberry Shop.
